Learning ABAP Program Bit By Bit

I call this activity Bit By Bit. Kinda like scaffolding in a way. In my ABAP class, I guide the students in writing an ABAP program. It is like bit by bit. One component of the program at at time. I named the sections as Requirement. Example

Requirement 1 - Define two data objects. The first data object is an internal table called itab and second data object is called wa. The type of this objects are scarr.

So, students will write the codes for this requirement. Students learning it bit by bit. There are students who get it and some who don't. From this activity, at least we know who gets it and who don't. If a student can't even pass declaration part, we can assume they will have similar difficulties in the other parts. But I personally think that, learning this bit by bit and slow is good for me to gauge student's understanding.

The Jigsaw Activity - Always a Favorite

This pictures were from my Fundamental of IS class January 2023 semester. It is one of my favorite activity to do. It is called the Jigsaw activity or some might call it as The Walkthrough activity because you have to literally walk through one station to another station to get a complete cycle of the material.

This activity is basically putting students in the driver's seat. That is what I like about this activity. One thing that I like is that students have to explain whatever that they have learned to another student thus increasing their retention and understanding.

The activity starts with their own group. Then in the group, I let them count to 4 and repeat counting if the the team members are more than 4 people. Why 4? Because they are 4 topics. Four groups were formed based on the four topics and I call this group the Expert group. Then, I would ask the students to go to their respective Expert Group whether is Group 1,2,3,4.

Next, they have to prepare a presentation slides using the mahjong paper of the topic that they are being assigned to. Everybody needs to contribute. Once they have done with the mahjong paper they have to put the paper on the wall. After preparation time is up. They go back to their normal group and they make rounds explaining the topic. In a group, one or two students might be an expert at each station, so these students have to present to their colleagues.

It was a fun activity and the students LOVE it. This will work effectively, if you have a venue like the one in the pictures with students between 30 students or so. The more topics, the more station you have and more time that the students need to complete a cycle.

Computer Ethics Project - Debate!

I was a bit lost on what project to assign to CECL students last semester. After giving it a thought, I think a debate will be a good platform for the students to challenge ideas on cyber ethics especially now, we have AI providing us with things that we have never seen before.

What I really like about this activity is that I hear students who rarely speak, speak. I feel that they could have ideas in them. They know about the content. So, in a way it is a good thing even though it is not how I envision it to be.

First and foremost, I don't know shit about debate. So, I refer to YouTube videos, ChatGPT, and Google for rules, format and everything. That is one. Another, how to get all that information that I have and fit that into a classroom setting. The students can talk but they ain't debaters.

Overall, I pull it through. It was nice to see this. Something that I have not done before.

My first post for May 2023. It is already Week 5. Two classes this semester Enterprise Resource Planning and Enterprise Systems Development.

Enterprise Resource Planning.

First year students. Two classes with different lecturers. Coordinating this class could be a challenge.

Enterprise Systems Development

One of my favorite class to teach because of the use of ABAP. Fourth year students which makes teaching this class less hassle.
