Week 7 - Fundamental of IS January 2026

This week is assignment presentation week.

This week's lesson is on e-commerce, transaction processing systems and overview of enterprise systems. For the first time this week, students play Blooket.

Students seem to know e-commerce based on experience and previous classes. So, I would not want to deep dive into it. I just focus on the key softwares i.e web server and e-commerce software, strategies for a successful e-commerce and payment systems.

TPS lesson is full force. Student must know what is transaction, TPS, example of TPS

MSc Progress Update - FA

 Meeting #2

Fatima presented her 'RPD' to me. Now, I get a clearer picture of what RPM is because I think the student does not really get it. Knowing the definition of the subject matter is important. Knowing and be firm about it. The student seems not to be too firm. Perhaps it is how she explain things. I think that if I know the fundamentals of the subject of her work, then it will be easier for me to guide her. She needs guidance for sure. Some SV does not have the time to do that. We just got to be patient with this student and don't think about no bullshit.

What is RPM? From my understanding, RPM is about doctors able to monitor the condition of the patient, whether it is heartbeat, oxygen levels, blood pressure, etc regardless of the location of the patient. Patient will strap to the device and using IoT to capture and send the data to the doctors. THAT IS IT. Of course, RPM falls under the telemedicine umbrella and telemedicine falls under the digital healthcare umbrella.

I actually have low expectation on the student's ability to do data collection and data analysis. She is new into research. It is up to the SV to guide her. Some students are good despite not knowing to do research. When you think about it, students have been exposed to some elements of research during undergraduate. FYP for instance. So, to say that student has no IDEA of doing research is not true. They know some but the knowledge and skills of doing research enhance when they move to postgraduate.

Okay, so what's next? I ask the student to redo the interview protocol. Make the interview questions more focused towards RPM (not telemedicine, not digital healthcare). Secondly, I am not convince by the students knowledge on TOE. The student seems to know things. But I am not convinced by the student knows. I want the student to include the definition of the TOE in the interview protocol.

When do I want? Thursday!

MSc Progress Update - Fatima Alam

Meeting #1

Date: 20-2-2025

Interview Protocols

  1. I commented on her IP. I feel that it is better if she could group the questions according to stakeholders i.e nurses, doctors, management.
  2. I feel that she has lack of idea on what she wants from the stakeholders. When asked about what do you want to know from the nurses, the response was not that convincing. I am thinking of giving her like a template so that she could write down her succinctly.
  3. She showed me sample interview questions from a source. She wanted to use this. I said I will look into it.

Presentation ala RPD

  1. I asked Fatima to do a presentation ala RPD to me. The reason is because I want to know what her research is all about. I also want to know her level of understanding.

APC paper

  1. I want her to share with me the APC paper that she sent to her previous SV. I want to know about how she write, her level of understanding and many more.

What I Need to Do

  1. Fatima is new to research. Very new. She has no clue in doing research.
  2. I need to do some reading a bit about Remote Patient Monitoring and TOE.
  3. Questions - how does Digital Healthcare System, Digital Healthcare devices, enabling technology like IoT and cloud and others relate to Remote Patient Monitoring.

FYP 2 - Progress Meeting #1 Week 2

I had a progress meeting with my FYP2 student this morning. Currently she has the data sets which I think is a progress.

She was asking if this is okay. I said YES. She then mentioned that she wants to develop the dashboard using Power BI for the data that she has and develop the prediction model using Google Collab. She asked which should I do first. I responded that you can do both simultaneously. But then she was already familiar with Power BI so, I think perhaps she should focus on the prediction model.

Next, was on the frequency of meeting. I said, TWO WEEKS ONE MEETING but the progress must be significant

Next Meeting

Next meeting will be 6-2-2025 Friday 8:30am. I would like to see the Power BI Dashboard.

Week 2 - Fundamental of IS Jan 2026

What is Covered?

The topics covered for this week are

  • Components of IS - I mentioned last week but this week, I kind of go deeper. I relate the an information system to the component of IS. By doing that, I also introduce system architecture. Students have not done any exercise on this as of yet. I think I need to introduce students to draw system architecture once I covered Hardware and Software.
The lesson begins with a recap. Then, I went deeper into component of IS and system architecture. I also highlighted on the benefits of IS. I talked about how the benefits of IS e.g enhanced decision making, efficient and effectiveness and improve collaboration relates to competitive advantage.

At the end of the class, I did this activity. It was towards the end of the class but I think, generally students get it. I just need to ask something like,

ETS Train Ticketing System is an ticketing reservation system for KTM. It is well known that an information system could give competitive advantage. Give a scenario on how KTM's ETS Train Ticketing System could potentially give competitive advantage to KTM. [4 marks]

What Can Be Done Better

  1. I think timing is an issue. I should pay attention on the time. What we want is to cover the things that we need to cover within the given time.
  2. I also need to think of the activity. I think this week lacks activity. To include activity, I need to do a proper lesson plan.

Next Topic

Next topic is on Careers of Information System. For this one, I think it should be a reading lesson. Give an activity for them to do. Think of which information system career that you like. Find a person with the career that you want. Find out what do they do, what is their responsibility and so on.

Another topic is Hardware and Software. Share slides and a video on this I think.

Week 2 - Enterprise Resource Planning Jan 2026

This Week

Done with lesson on functional areas, business functions and business process. I encourage the students to write notes. Please just jot down anything on that piece of paper. Because when I asked something which is quite obvious, student seemed to be blank. They need to write them notes.

For this lecture, I had my presentation clicker and my white board markers. I improved from last week. Those two things really make presentation smoother.

The students did 2 formative assessment. One was from Gemini. I like that one. The other one was from Ulearn. For the Ulearn, I think I should put a link rather than ask them to go to Ulearn. Too much hassle. Give link easy.

Next Week

I will not be in office next week and next week's topic is about ERP Implementation. Prepare a Notion page on ERP implementation with activities. The topics covered are ERP implementation overview, methodology, success and failures etc. Perhaps recap on what ERP is again.

Week 1 - Fundamental of IS Jan 2026

First day of class today. First I gave an overview of the course. Then proceed with ice breaking session. Generally, I'm happy with today's lesson. The venue is good. I love the learning hub. I love the set up. Unlike the venue in ERP.

I gave background. Proceed with Data, Information, and Knowledge. Next to Information System. So I think student knows what is Information System. I mentioned about the application that you use widely. It is not an application but part of the overall IS components (under software). The fact that you are using it, makes you the User (another IS Components).

I also explain about why we need information system i.e enhanced decision making, operational excellence, collaboration and competitive advantage. I don't think that I did enought

Next we need to relate an information system to a well known IS e.g ticketing system. But first, I need to explain

Week 2

  • Explain the components of IS - perhaps share a video to them.
  • Activity on why organizations need information system
  • Types of Information - full blown lecture
  • Careers of information system.
Anything that I want to improve? Nothing that I am not happy with. But I just want to give them case studies on how IS gives competitive advantage.

Week 7 - Fundamental of IS January 2026
