PG students, if you are demotivated, who you gonna call? Definitely not Ghostbusters. Had a meeting with a PG student who is overseas. Haven't heard from her for a long time. The thing about her is that when you send her a text, it takes few days for her to reply. It makes my job as the SV to be difficult. Before the meeting, I send her a text that I want to meet her about her studies. Not to ask her about progress or anything. Just want to know from her side about things.
My conclusion from the meeting was that she was demotivated. Overwhelmed with information. Don't know how to progress. Don't see the end of the tunnel.
If you are demotivated, you should TALK TO SOMEONE. That someone is your SV. I don't eat people. I want to help. I believe in the student. The student can complete her studies. Her problem is that, she didn't talk to anyone about her problems. To me, a support structure is crucial for a PG student. Doing a postgraduate can be daunting. You need to have that support system to make you feel better and motivated. This support system can be a group of PG friends from the same lab but some students don't have that. So, the closest person as far support goes, is your SV. Some attitudes need to change. Faster text response. Show your SV your progress etc.
Hope things get better for me and her.
