It seems that there will be failures this semester.
So, why do they fail? They did not do well in their final exam. How so? I checked their papers. Those who failed. Their answers are below expectation. Regardless of how well they said they answered. They will always ask you this Why I failed? I think I did okay. My coursework is good. That is the dilemma. They thought they did good but actually, they ain't
My reason why they failed.
- Their answers are not as expected. They were key points that would allow for me to give marks.
- When a question that is regarded as basic e.g What are the functional areas in ERP? The student still get this wrong. How is that you still do not know the 4 functional areas of an organization.
- The answers does not reflect the marks. Questions that are worth 4 marks is answered by a one-two liner. How can the lecturer give you 4 marks for this. A point and an example. Students have to demonstrate their understanding through their answers. If you are not able to demonstrate that, then you don't deserve the marks.
- The students who failed have poor attendance. Well, there is nothing I can do about that.
To put it bluntly, when I graded failed scripts, my impression is like DON'T THIS STUDENT KNOW ANYTHING? IT IS LIKE YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING. So, with that I think you deserve to fail. I agree, student's cannot be measured solely by final exam but final exam is one of the assessments. What you write reflects your thinking and understanding. You might not remember anything during the exam. It could be anxiety but whatever it is, you have to remain calm. Write key points and expand your key points from there. Don't go full big bang on the questions.
So, I would be getting Teams message from failed students. Why failed? I have tried my best yada yada yada You know the usual story but I am the one who graded your scripts.
Students should not see F as a failure. There are worse things that a student can go through academically than F. Take it as a set back. We all have set backs in life. Including students. And getting F is one of them. What do you do? Well, you are upset at first but as time goes by, you repeat the course then you start to see things. You are motivated. You grow up. You become mature.
If it is still the same in terms of your attitude and the way you study, then getting a F again is a possibility.
